Majoring in Actuarial Science at University of Waterloo, I started to work for my current employer three months ago. It was extremely difficult to look for a job for the first work term due to lack of experience and knowledge. It was hard time for me, and most friends as I know, to follow the job posting, apply for potential positions and prepare interviews everyday while experiencing a lot of assignments and midterms. Writing this really reminds me how tough my last term was! Unfortunately, I have to go through this again and again to my graduation. However, I finally got into Munich Reinsurance Company. It was a great opportunity for a starter to get into such an excellent leading company around the world. MunichRe is second to none in this industry so I am very proud to begin my career here. My work is preprocessing and translating clients’ data into our company’s database system using Oracle PL/SQL as my main tool. Developing a lot of professional knowledge and skills as well as improving my interpersonal communication skills this term ensure my belief that my choice on coop program is absolutely correct and wise. Having eight study terms and around five work terms will certainly take more time and effort to complete and sometimes it will be a hard time to go. However, it will be much easier to look for a job after graduation and it is more important to the whole career. Then, you will feel it is valuable to spend so much time and energy on coop!
If you want to ask me for some suggestions, I would advise you to try your best and not waste any time no matter you might take coop or regular program. Choose your major and courses wisely, and never waste time on those you are not interested in nor good at. For those who are interested in actuarial science and want to study for SOA exams, in my perspective, it is better to prepare those exams when the corresponding courses are finished. It helps you to be more prepared and save your time. Do the exams only if you think you have the capability on the required knowledge. Good luck!
